Lawyer, Peace Corps volunteer, business manager and politician the varied career of Carol Bellamy has touched many areas. After earning a law degree from New York University, she spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala. From 1973 – 1977 she was a member of the New York State Senate and from 1977 – 1985 she served as the President of the New York City Council. From there she entered the corporate world working for Morgan Stanley and Bear Stearns. After five years she found herself back in the not-for-profit world. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton as the director of the Peace Corps from 1993 – 1995 (the first form volunteer to hold this position), director of UNICEF from 1995 – 2005, President of World Learning 2005 – 2009, Chair of the International Baccalaureate Board of Governors from 2009 – 2015, and Chair of the Governing Board of the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund from 2014 – 2021. She has also been involved with the French American Foundation to promote relations between France and the United States, the Fair Labor Association, a group that advocates for international labor standards and awarded Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun.
